American bittersweet is a woody, climbing vine, that grows in uplands at woods and forest edges, in thickets and along roadsides. It does best on rich soil, in full sun. In plantings, establish several plants---some are mostly male, some are mostly female. The latter, if pollinated, produce attractive orange and red fruits.
